This site was created to help people who are not familiar with Kauai find many places and things to do. We started this website to help travelers save their precious vacation time by putting everything that is needed in one easy to use and convenient place. Every time we go somewhere, someone from the mainland stops us and asks, "can you tell me where..."
So, this website is for visitors on Kauai who would like a little help and friendly advice. Here, you will find all of the information you will need. We will let you know how things work here, and give you info on things you might not have even thought of about. We tried to include everything we could think of to make your vacation as organized and pleasant as possible.

 | | Things to do on Kauai : in this section we have put together a collection of things to do like you can take a tour of the island with Alex taxi and tours or take a tour of the island on the water, you can take a cocktail cruise with captain Andy, or a whale watching tour with Blue Dolphin tours. You could be planning your wedding and if you need to find things to do in Kauai like a place that will rent you the 2 horses for your on the beach wedding which would be silver falls ranch. You would want to check the Things to do area for such things as a great spa on the north face, or which helicopter service you should use. One thing that will get your motor running of course is to rent a Harley Davidson for the week and let your freak flag fly from Kauai Harley, and if you are not up to a big hog, how about a little moped? The things to while on kauai also covers the most fun in H2O, if you are look to do anything in, on or next to the water, such as snorkeling, scuba diving Kauai, surfing, or kayaking which type of kayak should you get and where? After we snorkel, surf, scuba or kayak, you may just need to know which beach you surf on, or where to best just swim, which has the best body views, or which one can you lay down and not hear another human voice, and imagine yourself as the Professor or Ginger If you need to buy a swimsuit or even that little bikini the go to our Where to section which has a where to buy a bikini. If you are thinking to yourself, "Oh a bikini, no I don't think so", then you also need to know how to pick out a sarong. These are all the activities you can do in stead of just going to the gift shop. Oh and in the Things to do section is the list of Spas and golf courses which is must while you are here, if that is your thing. |
| Sights to see is a section which contents the natural wonders of the Kauai island. Just like the rest of the world where there are 7 wonders of the world, we have the 7 wonders of Kauai. We help you plan your day and tell you the things the tour books don't tell you like, when you go to Waimea Canyon which Mark Twain labeled "Grand canyon of the Pacific" that you should bring snacks and water because the last rest stop is at the base of the canyon road, then it is 7.5 miles up and I mean up. Then you get the great view of the falls, so you get a 2 for 1 sale, Pu'u Ka falls (Pele's Lookout)which is over 150 foot water fall, wonder #2 but wait, that is not all the same road also slices and dices, no really if you continue up the road, you will find "The wettest place on the planet" wonder #3. But once again the tour books do not tell you that the wettest place on the planet comes with a 20 degree drop in temp and is fogged in most of the day, but still the only land way to see wonder #4 the Napili Coast all this is a good half a day and we have the trip planned out for you and where the other fun things to do are along the way. | |  |
 | | Where To is the section which has where to shop, where to eat on Kauai, Where to find a restaurant on Kauai. There are many ranges of restaurant on Kauai from Gaylords which is top for fine dinning, but if you would like steak, then there are 2 place the Bull Shed and The Kalaheo Steak House these are the top of the line, but what if you just want a nice casual dinner then you might go to Brennecke's beach broiler or to Duke's Canoe club. Now the local have another kind of eating which is called grinds, sorta like the coffee but in food, for that there are a bunch like Camp House Grill, Dani's Restaurant, The Eggbert's or Lihue Barbecue Inn. There are a few that can be a little deceiving from the out side they do not look like what you are going to find inside Like Lemongrass Grill, Tidepools, Tomkats grille, Wrangler's steak house. Where to stay on Kauai, Little do visitors know but we do have a few under $100.00/per night places to stay, like Motel Kauai, or The Kauai Palms, please note right up front that these are not the Grand Hyatt, well then nether is the Grand Hyatt because they changed their name. So we have listed all the Hotels, Motels, and the coolest sometime, the bed and breakfast on Kauai like Aunty Donna's. The problem some times happens that a person falls in love with Kauai and if you do then you will need to know where to buy a house on Kauai, or rent a condo for a month a each year. How to find the perfect gift, peace of art, and who can forget where to buy jewelry on Kauai? We have also put a few things like where go for a horse back ride, or where to Golf, and where to buy clothes on Kauai. You will find repeats sometimes on this site because some people may not think of shopping as a thing to do, but some would. So in areas like sites to see on Kauai, we often also have over laps because while visiting Waimea Canyon, we would tell you which places to eat along the way. One other lap over in the where to is such things as where to see whales, but that would also be found under Whale watching tours under Things to Do, and Sights to see. This might seem a bit redundant, but better safe then sorry. Just like, if we to list ourselves it would be under where to go to find where to go on Kauai. |
Technology: We added this section because on the little island of Kauai, it is hard to find where to do something's based around technology so let's get some of the facts out of the way, there are NO technology stores on the island of Kauai. No Best Buy, No CompUSA, No CDW, Our best place to buy technology, sad to say is Wal-mart. But with this in Mind, we find that we should help the visitors with a couple of fact about technology, like how to empty the digital card that is in that new digital camera you bought just for this trip? Also how to get the digital pics to look the best? We have not only given you general digital camera tips, but also give you some places you will want to go for photo's while you are here, and very detailed descriptions of when you should go, where you should stand and when to watch your step. We give you some samples and this is the only area where we sell some stuff. We sell a water proof bag for your camera which you can even take swimming and you should have to even play around the water. | Technology: Waterproof Camera Case |
Waterproof Camera CaseWe have been asked so many times, what can I do about taking digital photos while on vacation? So, I am writing this with that in mind. First, there are two major types of waterproof camera cases: soft waterproof camera cases, and hard waterproof camera cases. I have reviewed both hard and soft waterproof camera cases, and the very sad news is that you must be so careful using the soft waterproof camera cases.
| The soft waterproof camera case we reviewed is the SLR camera case with hard lens, (Code 455) $120.00. This can be found on their website, which is AuqaPac at: http://www.aquapac.net/usstore/erol.html#588X1411 I got the soft waterproof camera case that I am using to take these pictures from AquaPac to test. This was a newly designed unit, and they redesigned it from being a large zip lock bag, to having a hard lens on the soft waterproof camera case. I found that the new lens design is not that great. The lens tube is so long, and I think they designed the soft waterproof camera case for use with at least a 300mm camera lens. I do not understand why, because normally you want to shoot with a 28-80mm lens. | |  | | In most dive situations, or if you are snorkeling, you should be within a range of 20-30 feet. So, the ideal lens is the 28-30mm. This entire turtle encounter was captured with a Nikon D70 in an AquaPac soft waterproof camera case. The Nikon D70 was set to the Auto setting, and I turned it on before going in the water. Please note: with a Nikon D70 in a AquaPac soft waterproof camera case, you can still adjust whatever you need to. You may just have to work a bit harder. It feels like a very heavy zip lock bag. There is a large locking closure on the AquaPac 455, which has 3 locking switches. These are supposed to insure that the bag stays waterproof. | |  | | As far as using the AquaPac soft waterproof camera case, you will have to get used to a couple of things. The bag stays filled with a lot of air, so either you need to remove most of the air by squeezing the air out while closing the bag. Or, you may just have to learn to deal with the bag fighting with you as you are underwater. I tried it first not knowing to remove the air, and with every wave that I encountered, the bag was hard to hold on to. I went back to shore to remove the air, and it was both easier to use, as well as to hold on to. At that point I did notice that when I opened the AquaPac soft waterproof camera case that there was some water inside the AquaPac soft waterproof camera case. | |  | | This then concerned me. But, I remembered that the AquaPac website stated that the AquaPac soft waterproof camera case has a problem with condensation, and that you should use silica packets to help with this issue. I then dried the inside of the bag with my towel, and I removed the air. This seemed to work. As I used the bag more and more, it got easier to use, and I learned how to focus with the AquaPac soft waterproof camera case. Since the AquaPac soft waterproof camera case is a thick rubber like bag, it is not very clear to see through. So, you basically have to learn a point and shoot type of technique. | |  | | With a snorkel mask on, fighting with the bag to press the camera against the eye piece which is already pretty small, and the sun light shining at me from above, it was a quite a challenge. But, what are your choices for only $120.00? Well, if you are going to be shooting a lot of under water activities, you may wish to go with a hard waterproof camera case for your Nikon D70. Since the cost is a considerable amount more, around $1200.00 to $3.000.00+. Not everyone is ready to spend 2 or 3 times the amount of your camera in the first place to have a hard waterproof camera case. So, I have decided to build my own hard waterproof camera case for my Nikon D70. | |  | | So, there will be a link to the story as I now try a second time to build a hard waterproof camera case for the Nikon D70. I have researched all kinds of waterproof camera cases, and I have looked at companies like Ikelite, which makes the coolest hard waterproof camera case for Nikon D70s. But, they are like $1200.00, and that is just the start. Then you need a set of strobes and domes, and I am sure so much more. I think there is a market out there for a Nikon D70 hard waterproof camera case that would be a basic case. See, the IkeLite cases look like they are out of some SciFi movie. To be honest, they are for professionals who get paid $1000.00 per day for doing what most pay $1000.00 per day to do. | |  |
I live on Kauai, which is the farthest west island of the Hawaiian Islands. If I wanted, I could be in the ocean every day. Not saying that I'm not, but to be honest, I have other things to do. But, I would still like a nice simple hard waterproof camera case for my Nikon D70. I started about a year ago designing this hard waterproof camera case. But, I could never figure out how to take a picture. Believe it or not, it is not hard to make the hard outer case. What's hard is tripping the camera trigger. | Technology: Photography-How to Catch a Rainbow |
| | How to catch a rainbow? The island of Kauai in
Hawaii must be the most productive rainbow
farm in the world. I can not remember a day I
have not seen at least one rainbow. One of
the most requested e-mails I get on using a
Nikon D70 Digital camera is about catching the
image of a rainbow. It is a very difficult task.
The Napali coast is the most western place you can be and still stand on US soil. I went there on February 23rd 2007 because about once a year I like to go to this very famous coast. Why do I only go once a year if it is so great? "Bladder Buster Road" which is one of THE most rough roads anywhere, leads to one of the beaches on the Napali coast. Just as a matter of fact, even the rental car companies say you are voiding your rental agreement by driving the car down this road.
Once a year, I go down the Bladder Buster Road Which is a small 3 mile stretch of road that takes over 20 minutes to drive. We brought a lunch, which is a good idea. We then had a great Whale watching lunch. The whales were only a couple hundred yards off shore and they were playing. The photo's will be in an upcoming article. We want to catch rainbows right now.
So as I was driving on the way back, I looked to the right and I saw a half rainbow. I thought "great scene, but it would be way too hard to catch." At that moment a nice couple from what I would like to think is Iowa, drove up in front of me. The wife jumped out of the car and took a snap shot. All I could think was, "what a shame when she gets back home." "She will look at that photo and wonder what she was shooting at because there will not be a rainbow in that photo."
| Hence the idea of this article. I pulled out the Nikon D70, put my 50mm lens on, and point and shot. This was the first test, and I wanted to see how it would come out by setting the Nikon D70 on Auto. The image labeled (a) is that image.

| | Here is what you are looking at- I changed the DPI to 72 from the regular 300DPI, then I changed the size to 300 width and 199 height. This is image (a). I set the DPI to 72 because that is the resolution of your standard monitor on a computer. You could also set it to 96 and there would be no real change. If I was going to print this I would want to keep it at 300 DPI.
After making the changes to image (a), I wanted to see what Adobe Photoshop CS would do without making a fake rainbow. My next step was to change the curves. The curves tell Photoshop to balance not on what it thinks is white in the photo and what is black. You will tell it what white, black and 50% grey is. But George, "I do not know what those colors are." Guess! With the photo open, go to image, then adjustments, then curves.
| | Under curves, there are 3 eyedroppers. One looks empty. That is White. 1/2 full if 50%, that is grey (which you do not have to use). The one that is full, is black. I choose the white in the clouds. |

| | You choose the empty eyedropper, then move it over the clouds and click. You will then see the photo change. If it is too dark, or too light, then move a little and click again. I choose the clouds as white, and on the left side there is a cliff. This is the darkest area on the photo. I click each, then choose a grey cloud for the 50% grey, and here is the photo labeled (b). | | Now comes the sort of fun part- and the features that can make a "Wow" photo. This will change the photo from a cute little rainbow photo from your trip to Kauai, to a print on canvas you'll have your friends back home asking for a copy to hang on their wall. |

| Go back to the Image menu, and select adjustments, then select variations. Then play around. I played in the area of saturation which really changes the way it looks. What do you think?
In the next article on this subject I will show the correct settings which would give you a great photo when shooting the photo. I will do it with and without filters on the Nikon D70.
